Money in Cuenca: Ecuador uses the US dollar.
Ecuador uses the US dollar as legal tender. You spend USD cash and cards; there is no sucre to exchange on arrival. Banks and cooperativas are supervised by the Superintendencia de Bancos. ATM and card fees vary by bank and by your home issuer — we do not invent those numbers. Confirm products and requirements at the bank and at superbancos.gob.ec.
Dollarization has been in place since 2000. The Banco Central del Ecuador manages circulation of USD notes and the national fractional coins. You will meet $1 coins. Torn bills are a local annoyance; banks and the Central Bank have canje trámites for damaged currency — confirm those at bce.fin.ec / gob.ec, not at a shop that “might take it.”
How money actually moves
Cash
Still normal for mercados, taxis, and small shops. Carry small bills. Do not flash a stack. ATMs exist; your home-bank ATM fee is between you and that bank.
Cards
Accepted in supermarkets, many restaurants, and larger stores. Smaller places may be cash only. Foreign cards sometimes fail for boring reasons (foreign-transaction blocks, 3-D Secure). Call your issuer before you need a farmacia at night.
Local accounts
Banks will want identity documents — typically a cédula once you are a resident. Product lists, minimums, and whether they will onboard a new foreigner this month are bank decisions. Confirm at the branch. Superintendencia de Bancos is the supervisor, including an Intendencia in Cuenca.
A sensible order of operations
- Arrive with a debit card that works abroad, a credit card, and some USD cash in mixed small bills. Confirm with your US bank that Ecuador is not blocked.
- Do not open a local account on day two unless you already have the ID the bank requires. Many people wait until the cédula exists.
- When you are ready, compare a bank and a cooperativa yourself. We will not name a “best bank.”
- Keep a record of large cash movements. Tax and immigration questions are real; this page is not tax advice.
- If a bill is rejected, ask a bank — not a stranger on the street — about canje. BCE publishes currency-exchange trámites on gob.ec.
We do not publish ATM fees, wire fees, or “the cost of living for a couple.” Those numbers go stale and they are not our measurement to invent.

Do I need to change money at the airport?
No. The currency is already USD. You may want coins or small bills. Confirm ATM availability with your own bank.
Can I live on a US account forever?
Some people do, with cards and cash. Landlords, utilities, and some trámites are easier with a local account and a cédula. Confirm with the specific payee.
Are cooperativas safe?
They are a normal part of the system and are regulated, but they are not all the same. Check the institution against the Superintendencia. We will not endorse one.
